Today, as we stand on International Women’s Day 2026, I find myself reflecting not just on progress, but on the unfinished work of equality, justice, and opportunity for women in every sphere of life - including business, leadership and the digital economy.
The official IWD theme this year is “Balance the Scales” - a powerful call to confront systems, practices and cultural barriers that still tip the balance against women and girls.
It’s about fairness and dignity, about ensuring that every woman and girl has equal access to opportunity, safety and justice - not as an abstract ideal, but as lived reality.
For me, this theme resonates deeply - not just as a founder, but as a mentor, advocate and someone who has spent a lifetime working to create space for others to thrive.
When I look back at my own path in digital strategy, marketing and transformation, it wasn’t always smooth. More than two decades in this industry has shown me that gender inequity isn’t just a headline - it’s a quiet drag on confidence, opportunity, access, career progression, and economic participation. Women, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds, still face dated assumptions, biased systems and - yes - unequal pay.
Equality isn’t about advantage for some - it’s about dignity and fairness for all.
When women stand equal, our workplaces are stronger, our innovations are richer, our communities are safer, and our economies are healthier.
That philosophy has shaped my life and work in very real ways.
Mentorship - Because Representation Matters
One of the greatest privileges of my career has been mentoring the next generation of women leaders in digital marketing and strategy. Whether through The Digital Coach or community programs like Digital Leap, I’ve seen the transformative power of support, guidance and belief. Seeing a female founder realise her potential or an emerging leader find her voice is one of the most satisfying parts of my work.
Mentorship isn’t just about strategy - it’s about providing context, confidence and opportunity. It’s bridging the gap between where someone is stuck and where she knows she is capable of going.
Giving Back to the Industry - Beyond My Business
My commitment to supporting women and raising industry standards extends beyond Oceania Marketing Group.
As a former Vice Chair and Board Member of the Digital + Technology Collective, I worked to grow digital capability, visibility and leadership across Australia’s technology and marketing landscape. That role gave me the opportunity to shape industry direction, strengthen professional pathways, and advocate for broader inclusion and equity.
I also had the privilege of advising the Australian Government on building a digital economy, ensuring our nation’s future is shaped not by exclusion, but by equitable access to opportunity and capability.
These roles reinforced something I’ve always believed: justice and fairness aren’t passive achievements - they are engineered. They are built through relentless effort, structural change and the courage to challenge the status quo.
The Injustice of the Gender Pay Gap
One issue that continues to fuel my advocacy is the persistent gender pay gap - an issue that affects economic freedom and recognition for women everywhere. Even today, women must work significantly longer than men to earn the same amount, simply because systemic bias and unequal valuation of labour persist in workplaces across industries.
Closing this gap isn’t just good economics - it’s justice. It’s ensuring that talent is rewarded fairly, that contribution is valued equally, and that women are empowered to shape their financial futures without bias or barrier.
What Does “Balance the Scales” Mean in Practice?
Balancing the scales isn’t symbolic. It’s about:
Dismantling discriminatory structures — not just acknowledging they exist
Supporting women’s careers at every stage, from mentorship to leadership
Ensuring fair pay, fair opportunity and safe workplaces
Having the courage to call out bias and work towards systemic change
We don’t balance the scales by chance - we balance them by choice.
How We Can All Take Action Beyond International Women’s Day 2026
This International Women’s Day, let’s move from intention to action:
Give your knowledge - mentor someone who needs guidance
Give your voice - speak up for fairness in your workplace
Give your support - advocate for equitable pay and inclusive policy
Give your time - help dismantle barriers where you see them
Because progress isn’t just about metrics - it’s about impact on real lives.
This International Women’s Day, I invite you to stand with me - not just to celebrate women’s achievements, but to commit to the practical steps that make equality real. Real fairness. Real opportunity. Real justice.
Balance the scales - together.
With belief in what’s possible, Karen Lewis Founder & CEO, Oceania Marketing Group
